MacMinute Traditions Live On at MacTech and MacsimumNews

MacMinute Traditions Live On at MacTech and MacsimumNews
- Readers given option for two types of news presentations
- MacMinute Cafe continues, to be hosted by MacTech
- MacMinute archives to be hosted by MacTech

June 6, 2008 — WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. and NASHVILLE, Tennessee –
MacTech Magazine and Macsimumnews.com announced plans for MacMinute
readers. With the passing of Stan Flack (founder of both MacMinute and
MacCentral), his family has determined that the site cannot continue. The
family has opted to encourage MacMinute Readers to check out two news
options — MacTech’s Community News Scan, and Macsimumnews.com.
Additionally, the MacMinute Cafe will continue, and moved to MacTech
servers. And, the MacMinute archives will be preserved and hosted by
MacTech as well.

“Stan worked so diligently to create and maintain a site concerning Mac
related news, even throughout his terminal illness,” according to his
sister, Julie (Flack) McKenna.  ”We are honored that others continue that
which Stan began. We feel that the needs of the Mac community can be
serviced well by both MacTech and MacsimumNews. Stan spoke of them both
often, and I’m certain that Stan would be honored to have them carry on his
work. Because of Neil Ticktin and Dennis Sellers, MacMinute’s traditions,
archives and forums will live on, and we sincerely appreciate their
willingness, tenacity and long hours to help me make this happen.”

“Stan was a true pioneer in Mac media, and will be missed. While MacMinute
cannot continue, we wanted to find a way for his legacy to live on and to
remember Stan,” said Neil Ticktin, Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of MacTech
Magazine. “It’s been our privilege and honor to assist Stan’s sister Julie,
and to give MacMinute’s readers and forum users a path that keeps Stan’s
traditions alive.”

“It’s an honor for me to help, in some small way, to continue Stan’s
legacy,” Macsimum News Editor/Publisher Dennis Sellers says. “Stan was a
good friend of mine, from my early days at MacCentral. In fact, Stan is the
one who got me involved in the world of online journalism. I’ve always
hoped that Macsimum would have a bit of the flavor of MacCentral, with our
own twists. Now we’ll do our best to also continue the spirit of MacMinute.”

Readers can see samples of what both the MacTech News Scanner and
MacsimumNews have to offer, as well more information on the announcement,
at (http://www.macminute.com/)

And, MacMinute readers are welcome to joint the MacTech family in print as
well. MacTech Magazine is normally $47 per year in the U.S., but… The
Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft is sponsoring a limited number of
complimentary subscriptions. Individuals just pay a shipping and handling
charge of $9.95 to receive MacTech monthly for six months. This only
applies for new subscribers. For more information, and to fill out a short
survey to qualify, go to (http://www.mactech.com/ms-survey/macminute.php)

About MacTech Magazine

Established in 1984, MacTech Magazine is the only monthly magazine focused

from network administrators to programmers, from solution providers to
Enterprise, and in general anyone that’s interested in the Macintosh beyond
the user level. MacTech’s approach has always been that of “How-to” as

open source projects for the Mac (http://www.macforge.net), but also a
community search engine and a news aggregator to keep readers up to date

360Works Launches FTPeek FileMaker FTP plugin for OS X and Windows

ATLANTA–360Works, a leading FileMaker product developer, has launched FTPeek, a Universal Binary FileMaker plug-in that allows the upload, download, and manipulation of remote files on an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server entirely within a developer’s FileMaker solution. It is now available for download from http://www.360works.com/ftpeek.

“360Works built its reputation by being responsive to its customers and the marketplace. That’s why we developed FTPeek to meet the demand we discovered for key updates to an essential plugin,” said 360Works founder and president Jesse Barnum. “FTPeek is the first FTP plugin built specifically for the new FileMaker plugin API and the server scheduling features and secure transfers have been a big hit with our early adopters.”

FileMaker developers and FileMaker consultants can see a movie of FTPeek in action at http://www.360works.com/static/ftpeek_demos/ftpeekdemo.mov

“FTPeek is an absolute god-send and I have deployed it in many solutions already,” said 360Works customer ican Ltd developer Robin Ledward. “I think highly of 360Works plugins generally because they make my life so much easier.”

“No need to thank me for being an early FTPeek adopter,” said Matt Klein at Small Business Computers of New England, Inc. “The fact that it supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS is key. We have replaced two plug-ins (one for FTP and one for SFTP) with a single plug-in and can now offer FTPS as an alternative to our customers.”

“I like the FTPeek plugin so far, it is easy and straight forward,” said 360Works customer and early FTPeek adopter Ruben van den Boogaard of Infomatics Software. “I am a big fan of 360Works SuperContainer, and use their Scriptmaster product, too.”

Laud Music‘s Michael Lau downloaded his three-month beta test drive of FTPeek in March and calls it “awesome.”

FTPeek was developed for FileMaker developers and FileMaker consultants seeking updated functionality in FTP plugins. Its key features include:

Universal Binary cross-platform support

FTPeek runs at full native speed on Windows and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard) on PPC and Intel. FileMaker 7 or later is required. Installation and configuration is the same on Windows and Mac, and does not require purchasing separate Mac and Windows versions - the same license key works on all platforms.

Runs on FileMaker Server

Allowing the automation of nightly FTP batch transfers with the scheduled script triggering feature of FileMaker Server 9. No more ‘robot’ machines to maintain. It will also run in the Web Publishing Engine, allowing developers to embed FTP scripts straight into your FileMaker web solution with Instant Web Publishing (IWP) or Custom Web Publishing. These features require an Enterprise License.

Security:

Public key encryption is included with support for FTP over SSL (FTPS) and FTP over SSH (SFTP). Using encrypted FTP is as easy as switching one plugin function. In addition, you can access the public key of your FTP server to protect yourself from DNS spoofing attacks.

Transfer directly to/from FileMaker fields:

Developers that need to upload a Word document stored in their FileMaker solution, or upload HTML from a text field are no longer required to write it to a temporary directory - you can FTP directly from text and container fields to the FTP server. The same goes for downloads. This also works with documents and images stored with 360Works SuperContainer.

Includes a built-in FTP user interface:

If users are to have full FTP access to the server, there’s no need to build those layouts or run an external application - a full-featured, 100% FileMaker FTP solution is included with the plugin.

Pricing and availability

Pricing for FTPeek starts at $195 for a 10-user workgroup license - less than $20 per user. There is a 10% discount for FMPug members (access discount codes from http://www.fmpug.com). Developer licenses and Enterprise licenses are available, as well as a free demo - check http://www.360works.com/ftpeek/ for more information.
